The Truman Show

Life outside of ourselves is completely uncertain, and leaves humanity to think existentially about ideas every day. The only facts we do know about life is that our own selves exist, and nothing else. In the movie The Truman Show, the protagonist named Truman lived in a fake world centered on him. He was never certain at any point that any one person really existed, but he knew that he himself was true. Life surrounding may very well be an illusion, yet one can only be certain of the Truth in them.

In The Truman Show, Truman lived every day of his life as if he was being pulled by strings from someone above. This whole idea of the movie is relative to the idea of God controlling us in a way, and it makes us question if we are living a repetitive life without a purpose. Throughout the entire movie, Truman wondered if anyone else was true, and if they really existed. Everyone on Earth at one point experiences this existential thought about life, yet they generally push it aside. However, in The Truman Show Truman kept his thought of others’ existence, and tried to find the Truth. When Truman wanted to travel to Fiji, he noticed how every possible event would occur to avoid Truman to leave the city at all costs. All he knew at that point was that he was genuine, but became fairly certain that the world he was in was completely fake and set up around him.

Very often, people think existentially about numerous things, including the one that questions others’ existence. “I think, therefore I am” is a quote from Des Cartes that speaks exactly of this movie’s theme. People are uncertain of life surrounding them, but tend to disregard the fact of which could be true. That fact is that other people that see them daily are not of true existence, and that they are just figments of imagination. Truman experienced this many times, and eventually could not deal with it. He used the knowledge he knew to confront the Truth and entered the real world at the very end. Reality is a concept that can sometimes be misinterpreted, but should never have its meaning warped at any given time.

Humanity does not know what exists in real life, but can be certain only of their life. Truman in The Truman Show ironically discovered the Truth, and overcame the world that was not real. In our so-called reality, the true answer that we are looking for may never be discovered. The one Truth I can be certain of is that I exist, and only that I exist.
